Death Eater Wand (b)

Description

I decided that I'd make my own Death Eater wand, with a small carved skull at the handle end. I put this off for a long time, as I lacked the confidence to tackle it!
When my brother-in-law gave me a selection of American Walnut off-cuts, I was finally prompted to make a start...

Using a my Dremel, and some small files, I carved a separate piece of walnut into the skull shape. I started with rough forms, and slowly refined them. The skull isn't as anatomically accurate as I would have hoped, but acceptable for my first attempt at carving. After this I formed the wand body out of walnut dowelling. I don't have a lathe, so I locked my Dremel in place on its stand, and gently rotated the dowelling against the sanding bit. I then used a hacksaw to cut small channels into the wood, which I filled with white epoxy to simulate some sort of inlay.

The skull was attached to the end of the wand body. Not sure what the joint would be called, but I just drilled a hole into the base of the skull, into which I fitted the wand (with the help of some wood glue). Finally this was all sanded and polished to the same level, and lightly waxed with furniture polish.
